Introduction to LanSchool

The student version of LanSchool is installed on all student machines all ITC classrooms, the teacher version is only available on Teacher PCs in ITC classrooms.

LanSchool will run on the computer when the computer is logged in, so you should not have to find and run the application.

Accessing LanSchool

The following steps will describe how to access LanSchool and how to access LanSchool and the basic interactions you can make with the software.

On the bottom right of the windows taskbar, you will find the “show hidden icons” arrow which reveals applications running in the background.

From here - Right-click the LanSchool icon

There will be a context menu with several options available. To show the full LanSchool select “Open LanSchool Console”

Here we can see the LanSchool interface that may be familiar. This interface can be used to observe and interact with the student machines within the classroom you are currently in.

Commonly Used Teacher Controls

Displaying Teacher Screen to Students

To display the teacher screen to students select the show teacher button which will share your screen with all the students in the class.

Viewing Student Displays

It is possible in LanSchool to view student displays, the LanSchool console shows you a small image of each machine.

To view the screen of a specific machine, double-click on the display you wish to view. This will then enlarge the image so that the student display is much more visible

To leave this view and return to the whole class, click on the ‘Control’ Icon represented by a remote on the toolbar at the top.

Displaying Student Screen to Peers

Similarly to sharing teacher screens with students, LanSchool can also be used to display a student display to other machines. To do this select the student from the room by clicking on them and pressing the ‘Show Student’ button.

Blanking Student Screens

LanSchool allows a teacher to ‘blank’ a student's screen, When the screens are “Blanked” students will not be able tio use the pc in anyway..

This is completed by selecting the computers you would like to blank and selecting the ‘Blank Screen’ option on the toolbar located at the top of the window.

Note: If no specific machine is selected all machines in the room will be blanked.

To restore the student machines from a ‘blank screen’ simply press the same button.

Changing the Blank Screen Message

By default, the message displayed when blanking screens is “Eyes to the front please”. This can be changed and configured by selecting the arrow next to the blank screen icon followed

by the ‘Configure Blank Screen Message’.

At this point, it is possible to edit the message to the blank screen message in the text box provided, with a drop-down arrow to show the previous messages used.

To save the message, first click Apply and then OK - The process is the same to revert the configured message to “Eyes at the front please” or any other previously configured message.

Remote Controlling Student Machines

Another useful feature of LanSchool would be the ability to take control of a student’s machine and control it as you would your machine.

To do this you view the student's display (as detailed above), select the arrow next to control, and select ‘Remote Control’

From this point, you will have full control of the machine and the student will have no control whatsoever and will not be able to control any aspect of the machine.

To relinquish control of the machine back to the student, simply select the same menu (Arrow next to control) and select ‘Stop Viewing or Remote Controlling’ and the student will be able to control the computer once again. Taking you back to the main LanSchool Console

Tips for using LanSchool

  • To refresh the LanSchool Console (Interface) press F5 on the upper row of the keyboard, this will show the current state of the student machines

  • To select multiple students, hold ‘Ctrl’ and click on each machine you wish to select

  • To select a range of students, select the first student, hold Shift’ and click on the last student you wish to select
